SafeAbroad, a leading advocate for safety and risk assessment for students studying abroad, presented the 2023 Safety Abroad Summit virtually on September 14, 2023. The Summit focused on health, safety, security, and risk management for international education. The UC Riverside Education Abroad Office partnered with the African Students Program (ASP) to send students on a nine-day educational trip to Georgetown, Guyana. The students learned about Afro-Guyanese history and engaged with local organizations. Dr. Jamal J. Giving Tuesday is an annual fundraising event where non-profit organizations try to raise as many funds as possible in a 24 hour period. For 2021, International Affairs hosted two fundraising efforts: one to support Education Abroad scholarships and one to support international students at UCR. Worldfest Education Abroad Fair 2021: Perspectives & Reflections from Faculty and Students UCR’s 2021 Worldfest Education Abroad Fair was mostly virtual this year, with many sessions offered by international education organizations, like CAPA, API, and JET. A session on the UCR Faculty-Led Education Abroad Program (FLEAP) was also hosted for students to connect 1:1 with FLEAP faculty in break-out rooms. Public donations will help scholars fleeing from danger, offer them safety .

Eleven UC Riverside students have been selected for two prestigious national scholarships to study or intern outside of the United States. 

Goldwater scholars Shayan Saeed and Ryan Gates; and U.S. Fulbright scholars Jacqueline Aguirre de la O and Zehra Qazi are recipients of two of the nation’s most prestigious awards.  The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is one of the country’s most competitive honors in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, or STEM. The application process is rigorous and asks students to think deeply about their research and long-term goals.

UC Riverside’s International Affairs shifted into a nearly 24/7 operation earlier this year, especially in its efforts to recruit new international students. The team spent thousands of hours redesigning programs for virtual platforms — all made accessible to students in the United States and around the world.  

An international education was key for these UCR students’ futures.

Australian officials signed an agreement last night allowing UC Riverside to continue its pioneering research on a government-owned goldmine for unusual fossils. Nilpena Station is a city-sized plot of land in the Australian Outback. It harbors the richest collection on Earth of animal species around 550 million years old. Some of its fossil beds are the size of a tennis court and contain entire communities of organisms.
